Antivirus for Linux, Installation Issues-please help!?

Our class is installing antivirus for Linux, Fedora Core 3 on 2 clients and a server. I can download and install Avast-Home Edition (Free), but when I try to run it, the only way it will work is by scanning ONLY the home directory, standard scan. If I try to scan the entire system and/or do a thorough scan, the system freezes. It will lock up the entire computer and not recognize the keyboard or mouse so the only way to shutdown is to hold the power button. Every time I reboot, Avast makes me re-insert the registration key before allowing me access to the scanner. I have already uninstalled all previous versions/downloads of antivirus as well. Please help!

Krypt is correct as you have 2 options and both will require that you have the root password for the machine. You probably do as you would have needed it to install Avast in the first place.

1. Login as root and run avast

2. Login as a normal user -%26gt; open up a terminal -%26gt; type ''su -'' and enter the root password. run avast from the terminal.

Note that Krypt asked to run ''su'' as oppose to ''su -'' in step 2.

few days ago my computer was infected by trojanvirus, i installed avast antivirus and scaned in boot mode it prompt me to delete or quarantine some .exe files in c:\, d:\, after deleting these all virus files when my computer logged on I was not able to find windows %26 program files and many more movie files but my computer is still running and there is no changes in my disk space really before scanning my computer has 20.1 gb free space and after scanning I have 20 gb of free space. You should quarantine everything for a month or so, then if all is OK with your computer and all of your programs, then you can delete. Some anti-virus programs give their quarantine a cutsey name like ''Chest'' or ''Vault'' but it's one and the same.

Linux has a built in firewall called IPTables and viruses don't do much harm on most linuxes.

Of course Redhad 7 is pretty old. You should have your web host install a web based admin tool such as Webmin or cPanel so you can manage stuff easily via the web.

Or you should quit them and switch to a company that uses more current linux versions and offers web based management.

The only case I would use A/V software on Linux is if I was running a mail server, or public FTP, then I would use ClamAV.

I use Futurehosting and they rock. (Virtual Private Servers)

Sounds to me like you need managed hosting though, or need to learn more about being a Linux admin.

So, I downloaded the software (free version) onto my computer. Well, it scaned my computer, but I have to get a lisence to remove them. The Lisence cost money. Well, I went to the control panel, and I went to Add/Remove program and I deleted it. Well, It is still on my computer! So, I looked it up on Answers on how to uninstall it, and someone gave me a link to a site that uninstalled it, and in order to do so, I have to install a program. Well, I have Spyware Terminator 2, and it said that the XP Antivirus came up as a virus, so I made it delete it, but it didn't go off. So, now I know that XP antivirus in indeed a virus. How can I uninstall it?

My computer came with Norton preinstalled. I used it for a couple of months until the free trial ended. I then download the SBC(now AT%26T) Yahoo Online Protection Package. It required me to completely remove the Norton program before it would function. This is because you cannot run two AV programs at the same time. They conflict and provide no protection at all. The two of them can also do physical damage to your computer. (Rare, but possible).

I recommend the AT%26T package. The AV program is excellent and is not an attention whore like the Norton was. The only time I get bothered by it is when it runs a scan. I have mine set to run scans every three days.

It automatically updates. You will see an update Icon in the SysTray when it is doing this. The Auto update feature allows for updates 24 hrs a day.

You will hear negative opinions from people about the Protection package provided by AT%26T (SBC). Most of these opinions are from people who know nothing about the programs and have never used them. I have used it now for almost a year and am very happy with it.

The best way is to try to unistal and do a manual install (not automatic) and dont click to install Nortron Firewall, another way is to see if you can uninstall it sepratley from the ADD/REMOVE programs panel. If you cant you can always Disable it from Running, Tho it May conflict with Systemworks and may end up being glitchy.

To disable, Go to Start%26gt;RUN and type in MSCONFIG then here, click Selective Startup, Then go to startup tab, and disable anything thas says norton Firewall, becareful, since you are still running System works and may accdencitly disable a startup program from that.

Also since your there, Go to Services and Click Hide Microsoft Services, and Try to find any Services that point directly to the firewall software, not Symantec itself. Uncheck those and Click apply, Restart and it should be disabled.

Also, don't log on as ROOT (administrator) when you don't have to. You're extremely unlikely to get a virus though

Ubuntu, out of the box, is fairly secure. The root account isn麓t even activated and there isn麓t anything listening to the internet.

You will find that you can easily add firewall software and antivirus scanners by searching for them in Synaptic (System -%26gt; Administration -%26gt; Synaptic Package Manager) but for the most part you won麓t need them to start.

Firewalls in Linux are actually a small part of a much more powerful tool called iptables. With gui tools like Firestarter you don麓t have to know all the details to get set up but you might be surprised at what else it can do if you take the time to learn it.

Hi! I am a descent computer user, meaning I know how to mod computers, and I know how to remove spywares, I know how to fiddle with regestry etc. But I have to know this. I know that most antivirus programs confilict with each other when you are running them at the same time. (Meaning running real-time protection at the same time.) I know that they conflict, but one time, I installed two antivirus programs at once, and I had no touble with them. (Antivir and AVG free Edition.) I know that there should be a conflict between these two, (well theoradically...) but I know seen no problems at all. It is ok to run both of them at the same time? (Maybe more protection???)

It is possible that 2 AV programs running live scans at the same time can cause your computer to crash. They see each other as a threat, try to eliminate each other, and go into an endless loop. It doesn't always happen but it could. (Personal experience showed me this to be true.)

Two Antivirus?

I have the SBC antivirus but it doesn't really do much and doesn't delete my viruses so I downloaded a free one, but when I was installing it it said that having two antiviruses could create system problems. I don't really want to uninstall the sbcone, but is it safe to install the new one. The new one is called bitdefender antiviris if that helps. Also, do you think I'd be better off going to a store and getting one. The viruses that I have don't sem to be doing much, but I'd like to get rid of them anyway.

u can use comodo firewall pro.
Windows firewall is enough to protect you, if u want another firewall, u have to disable windows firewall first otherwise they will be conflicting each other and you will face another problem.

You can search the whole web for a free software (like zonal alarm) but then if you are working on a office network then you have to configure your firewall to access on the office network, if your pc is used at home and not connected to any network u dont require any configuration.

For antiviruses (Mcafee or norton or other), if they are not having inbuilt firewall, they will not be interfering with any other seperate firewall programs. But if they do have (like their internet security versions) they will be interfering anywith any other seperate firewall programs. In that case you dont even need other seperate firewall programs.

When trying to instal ANY antivirus (kaspersky, avg(wich was installed and suddenly dissapeared)) installation stops and there is error: cant open ..... file, and it doesnt want to continue.....

I have an antivirus software that i didnt install. I dont even know where it came from. Nobody else uses this computer. I was just using my computer one day and then a program i didnt install started checking my computer. Just a few minutes ago, I let the scan run. It said I had Trojan! I knew it couldnt be true so i checked my computer with AVG(the one i had installed already). It found nothing that could even be related to Trojan. So my question is, is this program a virus? Do a reinstall of the program and choose the repair option, then you will have to update after installing.
I have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and it's set to update automatically. After a few months it stopped doing this and I didn't change the settings. i have norton antivirs 2003. i just installed it, i skipped tre registration becuase it says that i get 90 days free. and i did. so i updated it untill it said it has no mroe updates to download, i updated my computer as well. and yet i get this bubble that says ''Norton Antivirus is Installed but the status is unknown'' its a litle red shield with a white ''x'' in the center. when i open norton it says the status is ''ok''.

AVG antivirus program help?

I have AVG antivirus.

It was working fine for a few months, then upon one update (this evening) told me it needed to restart. I restarted my computer by clicking the ''Yes'' button.

When my PC had restarted, I got the following message:

''Unfinished update of AVG Free Edition has been detected. To finish the Update process, it is necessary to restart the computer now.

Do you want to restart the computer now?''

At which point I am given the choice ''Yes'' or ''No''. When I click ''No'' I have to protection and my computer freaks out. When I click ''Yes'' my computer restarts, but I get exactly the same message AGAIN. It is a vicious loop someone save me.

Cause today my ipod infected by virus so all files in it become hidden (including song, video, and photos), first i panicked until i notice that it says that there's 40 gigs used in my ipod but there are no song, playlist, photos, and movie in it..So i come up with theory that the virus hid all the files so it can't be detected by my ipod, so i scan it with mcaffe antivirus and hope that it will fix the infected files and return my files, but mcaffe delete all the files in my ipod after the scan..Now it says that it has 50 gigs free (all the files are probably gone now..I'm really devastated right now and i don't want this to happen again..I don't want to use any mc affe, what antivirus should i use? most Antivirus programs first attempt to clean the file, then delete the file is cleaning fails, and if it cannot be deleted it is quarantined. I believe Norton operates in that fashion. A good free Anti Virus is the AVG Free Edition AntiVirus.
Norton and AVG are terrible anti-viruses. Norton blocks everything and AVG does basically nothing. Use NOD32.

Simple answer to this one: Use AVG Free instead of McAfee. I have McAfee VirusScan installed on my computer downstairs and AVG upstairs, and I've seen little difference (though I like both better than Norton). Both programs are detected by Windows and work very well.

All the companies I work for use Norton. I find it to be a good program that allows little delay in the usage of the PC's. Also, you can control each computer if you choose to from the server (i.e., updates). Lastly, be aware that you will need to by individual licenses for each computer. I personally think you should use Windows Live OneCare.

It's easy to use, it works quite well, and I've had no problems with it. It's also pretty cheap at some places. Like I heard Sam's Club sells them for $11 and stuff like that. The most highest retail price is $49.

It has a nice UI, easy to use and understand, and it just works. Really. They've improved it a bit, and right now there's a 2.0 beta going around that really improves OneCare a bit.

Other computer security companies are even copying OneCare's easy to use look and UI such as Norton 360.

AVG its free and good.
You can do either of two things. Get a free one from your server - after all you are paying to be on the Internet, and they do provide protection for your computer. It is usually with the bundle you pay for. I have Shaw.ca and there protection package is great. but if you use it and you are not with Shaw service then it will cost around $100. But check your provider first. Or you can go to the site below.

You should be fine... But... Don't use System Mechanic anti virus as it will conflict with Norton.

You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Problem with Avast Antivirus?

I downloaded the free edition of Avast but then it seemed to cause some of my programs to shut down. I decided to unistall it, but then I couldn't find the setup utility. I tried every program I had to get rid of it and in the end I just deleted all the files from program files and cleaned the registry.

Anyways, later on I got a virus that wouldn't let me open my other antivirus and I ended up reseting my operating system.

Have you ever found a program with a missing uninstallation utility? Should I just have used the original setup file to uninstall the program? What should I do if I decide to try Avast again and there's no uninstallation program?

First problem. You appear to have had TWO Anti-virus programs running at the same time. This never works because each Anti-virus thinks the other IS a virus. And this may also explain why the original Avast un-install failed. Second problem, you tried to remove Avast manually. This requires expert skills.

So, download Avast again, but do not install it yet. Then, re-boot your PC in Safe Mode. And, using Add / Remove programs, un-install it, then re-boot normally and all should be well.

TIP: As counter-intuitive as this sounds, it actually works.

Hey everyone. I'm needing good antivirus and antispyware that doesn't use up a lot of system resources, is good at detecting and removing viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, rootkits, and all that other stuff. I currently have these tools: ZoneAlarm Security Suite, ThreatFire, Windows Defender, Ad-Aware 2007, Advanced WindowsCare V2 Personal, CCleaner, RegCure, Spybot - Search %26 Destroy, SpywareBlaster, TuneUp Utilities 2008, and lastly Zappit!. The problem is I know I don't need all those tools for my computer to keep it free from the threats of the internet, so I'm asking you for your help so I can uninstall most of those program for something better, and more efficient. I need it to work with Windows XP, and like I said above need the program, or programs to work well. I'm also looking for something to fix my registry other than RegCure. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. As for the people above me who said that AntiVir is a bad program are wrong. It protects just as good as any paid program, it only is free, and takes up less resources. I'd go with Avast/AVG/Avira/AntiVir over Norton/McAfee any day.

AVG is one of the best AV programs out there.

It has a foot print of less than 50MB. Some claim that task manager only reports an increase of 2MB total RAM space increase after installation.

As I have not researched what background services are running, I am not prepared to lay claim to that bold statement. However, it's not very resource hungry and unless it's scanning you will never know it's there.

Best of all...free. No bloatware, just a simple AV that is very effective.

I only recommend BitDefender and any AV built around the kaspersky engine otherwise. You normally pay for these.

Beware of running free online software. I got a worm borer by doing this and it eventually took down my whole system. Run your regular softwear to detect anything wrong and use that as your tool. Never use anything off the Internet. If you don't have up to date product for viruses and such, go to office supply or such and buy it. Please...not on line.

The one that attached itself to my system was called Bullet Proof and it took me down. My computer had to go in the shop for recovery to the tune of $90.00. We now have McAfee. It's great!

Alright, I just download a LiveUpdate thing, and when I restarted my computer, it said 'my free trial period has ended'. I tried activating the program with the program key that I found on my computer, but it doesn't work.

Try to use Spybot S%26D(free antispyware), and AVG or NOD32 antivirus. I'm using NOD32 and Spybot for few years and never had any damage on my comp.
It cannot accept the product key because the software's free trial period has ended, and you cannot update until you renew your subscription with Norton.
There is a difference between a Product/Program Key (and other aliases) which you might find on the 'About' page of a program, and an activation key. As a rule, activation keys do not remain stored.

I've been using Panda Security for a couple years now, and it seems to work well. It has the antivirus, firewall, and spyware protection, among other things. Best thing to do is read the articles from Consumer Reports magazine. It's how I found Panda. You can go to the library and read some of the back issues.
The only antivirus programs you can buy in stores are Norton Anti-Virus and McAfee.
